     Emmitsburg's Historic Village is overwhelmed by the level of commuter traffic and inordinate amount of heavy truck traffic. 

    A county-wide transportation study conducted in 1995 projected the road segment of Md. 140 West in Emmitsburg would be near failing in its ability to accommodate vehicle traffic by 2020 if no other alignment was constructed to divert some of the traffic. 

     In the 11 years since the study, residential subdivision development has dramatically increased just across the Pennsylvania line in Adams County Pennsylvania.  Emmitsburg's historic village will become a parking lot within 13 years if no action is taken. 

     Maryland and Pennsylvania officials must enter a compact to plan, fund and construct an alternate route for motorists using Md. 140 to travel between PA-16 and  Rt. 15.

   Until a bypass is a reality, Emmitsburg should take immediate steps to preserve its assets and historic community.   A reasonable truck restriction through the village should be a priority.  Such a restriction is needed to address the safety, structural, and health issues arising from the hundreds of heavy trucks using our main street every day as a short-cut between Maryland and Pennsylvania interstates.
